Two small mallards, Vincent and Paul, come to live with the Pines, a family who wanted "something that walked"! Unfortuneately, it is the Pines first time to take care of baby ducks, and through a mis-calculation in their needs for a coop, Paul is taken away by "dogs"! Vincent is left to figure out life for herself, which is not easy because Paul was always there to explain the happenings in the world about her. Still she persists, with the search for friends, a mother, and the dream of life and freedom that Paul had pursued every since he was a warm egg in a duck hatchery! The Pines also feel that Vincent deserves the best of life and adventure, and when she is old enough, they take her to the beautiful Chaplain Lake on the campus of Norwestern Louisiana University, in the historic little town of Natchitoches( which is not a duck hatchery!
