Communicating with Older Adults: A Guide for Healthcare and Senior Service Professionals and Staff is designed to improve communications between health care professionals and senior service staff and the older adults they serve. Better communication will help professionals provide a higher standard of service and care to all their patients and clients. Communicating with Older Adults: A Guide for Healthcare and Senior Service Professionals and Staff is written by Ann E. Benbow, Ph.D., SPRY´s Director of Adult Learning and Technology. It presents separate sets of recommendations for four groups: health care professionals and clinical care workers; pharmacy professionals and staff; workers in long term care and assisted living; and senior information and referral workers. The book´s recommendations are based on research that included an analysis of published work and interviews with experts in the fields of education, neuroscience, psychology, gerontology, communications technology, adult literacy, and marketing. The principles and recommendations in the guide reflect the areas of strongest agreement on the learning preferences and characteristics of older adults. Nineteen older adult learning factors are explained and cross-referenced to the book´s practical suggestions and forms. An extensive listing of additional online and print resources and references is also included. The research supporting the book´s development was funded by the Retirement Research Foundation, the SPRY Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. How This Book Is Organized: Section I contains five checklists of suggested techniques arranged chronologically to fit most clinical settings. These communication techniques are appropriate for use by physicians, nurses, dentists, or other medical professionals. After each checklist is a subsection providing details on how to implement the suggestion in the checklist. The five checklists are: - Before the Office Visit: Contacts with patients/clients before an office visit. - At the Office, Before the Consultation: Contacts with office staff and materials in the waiting room that are available to patients/clients before they see the medical professional. This section includes interactions with a medical assistant before the consultation actually begins. - Beginning the Consultation: Discussion prior to any physical examination. - Continuing the Consultation: Discussions during the main body of the consultation. - Ending the Consultation: Discussions at the end of the consultation that include follow-up items (prescriptions, directions, advice, contact information). Section I also contains templates and forms that can help health care professionals implement some of the suggestions in this book. Section II contains two checklists of suggested techniques for use in pharmacy settings. These communication techniques are appropriate for use by pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. After each checklist is a subsection providing details on how to implement the suggestion in the checklist. The two checklists are: - Information Materials: Suggestions about types of materials that might be most effective with and user-friendly for older adult customers. - Face-to-Face Interactions: Practical suggestions on how to discuss medications most effectively with older adult customers and how to answer their questions with care and sensitivity. Section II also contains a survey form that can help pharmacy professional implement some of the suggestion in the guide. Section III contains three checklists of suggested techniques for use in communicating with and serving mentally competent residents and patients in assisted living, sub-acute and rehab care settings, and nursing homes. (Note, however, that these techniques are NOT intended for use in situations involving patients or residents who are suffering from Alzheimer´s disease or other forms of dementia.) After each checklist is a subsection providing details on how to implement the suggestion in the checklist. The three checklists are: - Informational Materials: Suggestions about types of materials that may be the most user-friendly and beneficial for residents. - Working One-on-One with Residents: Practical suggestions on how to work with residents in helping them to comply with their medical regimens and in their activities of daily living. - Working with Residents and Health Care Professionals: Suggestions and ideas for how to maximize the effectiveness of the time that residents spend with visiting health care professionals. Also included at the close of Section III is a survey form that can help staff in assisted living communities and rehab and skilled nursing facilities implement some of the suggestions presented in this book. Section IV contains four checklists of suggested techniques for use with older adult clients. These communication techniques are appropriate for use by Information and Referral Specialists in a variety of settings. After each checklist is a subsection providing details on how to implement the suggestion in the checklist. The subsections are: - Informational Materials: Suggestions about types of materials that may be the most user-friendly and beneficial for older adult clients. - Working Face-to-Face with Clients: Practical suggestions on how to work with clients in helping them to find the information and help they need to stay as independent as they can for as long as possible. - Working with Clients and Health Care Professionals: Suggestions and ideas for how to maximize the effectiveness of the time that clients spend with their health care professionals. - Talking on the Telephone with Clients: Advice on how to maximize interactions with older adult clients over the telephone. Section IV also contains forms that can help Information and Referral Specialists implement some of the suggestions in the guide. Section V summarizes the research findings of the SPRY/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation research project. The research is presented as a set of 19 learning factors appropriately considered in communicating with and providing care to older adults. The section also includes a list of additional resources for each of the 19 learning factors, as well as source citations for each of the 19. The Appendix is a table comparing the strategies used by older learners and younger learners. Finally, there are Profiles of Dr. Ann Benbow, The SPRY Foundation, and Caresource.
