Morell, born in Havana 1948, emigrated to New York when he was 14 years old. While an undergraduate at Bowdoin College, Morell became interested in photography and discovered the work of Minor White. His course in photography however, took him to work the street in the tradition of Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand. It was after his son was born in 1986 that he turned his camera on his immediate environment and adopted the mystical approach to the everyday that Minor White espoused in his phrase “things for what else they are.ö Working with the camera obscura to project the world outside, on the walls of spaces inside, he creates an outer/inner space that is ethereal and fleeting; an upside down and backwards environment that can be seen but not touched, captured on film but never inhabited.
