Ochre coloured embossed boards with gilt lettering to spine, brilliant white end-papers. Introduction on Stuart by Valmai Hankel. Originally published by F.F. Bailliere in Melbourne in 1863 this is a facsimile edition (Australiana Facsimile Editions No. 210) published in 1996 by The Friends of the State Library of South Australia, Adelaide and is limited to 500 copies, 99 of which are numbered. "J. M. Stuart's Explorations, 1861-2. Diary of J. McDouall Stuart's explorations from Adelaide (South Australia), across the continent of Australia, December 1861, to December 1862. To the Hon. H. B. T. Strangways, Commissioner of Crown Lands and Immigration. Adelaide, 18th December, 1862. Sir, - For the information of His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief, I have the honour to report to you my return to Adelaide, after an absence of twelve months and thirteen days; and I herewith beg to hand you my Chart and Journals of the the Expediition, from which I have just returned." From Valmai Hankel I quote "Described by one of his companions as "the king of Australia's explorers", John McDouall Stuart is not well known outside his "home" state of South Australia. Four times he set out from Adelaide, between August 1859 and October 1861, before he reached the elusive north coast, at Van Diemen Gulf, on 24 July 1862. He arrived back in Adelaide from his final expedition on 17 December 1862, without losing the life of one person on any of his expeditions. Ironically, Alfred Howitt had passed through Adelaide on his way to Melbourne six days earlier, with the bodies of Robert O'Hara Burke and William Wills. They had reached the Gulf of Carpentaria on 11 February 1861, but at a latitude less than two degrees further north than Stuart had attained in June 1860, Seven men died on the Burke and Wills expedition" !
