Would she serve on a hospital ship as her friend Gladys did, cruising the Med. and seeing the Pyramids? Would she Follow her sister to London to take a course in driving; or work on a farm; or be a WAAC ? No, Dora's parents need her at home, where only occasional Zeppelin raids enliven the routine. And then '2nd Lt Cecil Slack, her childhood friend, comes home on leave and asks her lo be his wife. So begins an intensive correspondence in which two worlds confront each other. Thank God I'm Not a Boy! chronicles not only a courtship but also two very separate experiences of war. As Cecil watches the friends he grew up with being blown to pieces he carries with him a letter containing a fragment of material from Dora's new dress. And while Dora digests Cecil's account of lulling enemy throats with his new jack-knife she learns how to lend the sick as a IAD nurse, wrestles with doubts about love and marriage and suppresses her constant fear that every letter she receives might he the last. She admires Cecil's pluck, and she is truly patriotic, but when she lets slip "I don't care a hang for the nation so long as you come through all right" we are face to face with the authenticity which renders these letters so gripping.
