The elusiveness to science of the mystery of sex derives from the peculiar history of Western civilisation. Science's inability to really understand sex - and many connected phenomena - derives principally from the mental constrictions placed by the influence of religion. From the time Roman Emperor Constantine I became a Christian and made it the official religion of the Roman Empire, Christianity rigorously persecuted every other existing religion in Europe (and, subsequently, in much of the rest of the world) into extinction: far from the celluloid myths of Cecil B. De Mille, the persecutions of the Christians (which occurred only in a very short period of history) has never remotely approached the persecutions by the Christians of every other religion since then, all over the world. The all-encompassing legends of Christianity, which continue to dominate Western minds, have served to condition and circumscribe thought to conform with the Christian dogma: the conditioning induced a subconscious refusal to accept any realities which did not comply. This gave birth to skewed, even convoluted, attitudes and ways of thinking in many fields. One such reality concerned Genesis, itself. The Christian domination meant that human thought itself was conditioned by Christian ideas and beliefs. Christianity depended fundamentally on the primary tenet that "God created man and woman", and nothing could challenge that primary "truth": the whole Bible depended on it. By definition, anything which conflicted with it must be false. It was a view of life which gained automatic general acceptance under hundreds of years of Christian dominance and governed much of the thought and direction of Western science. This perspective of things automatically ensured that many of the beliefs and perspectives of a fundamentally ignorant peasant community which existed 2000 years ago in the Middle East, amazingly, extended into the last quarter of the Twentieth Century, otherwise unremittingly modem. The inevitable contradictions between theory and obvious fact (as discovered in the intervening millennia) which this bizarre situation produced have tended to be "resolved," to ensure a non-chaotic existence, by a remarkable compartmentalisation of thought - itself made possible by the dominance of the religion. It has enabled schools, for instance, to have a religion class where children troop in to be taught that a god created humans and, just minutes later, for the same children troop in to another class where they are equally seriously taught that humans, in fact, developed through a process of evolution. In America, a few years ago, Christian fundamentalists pointed out the absurdity of this situation that one or other MUST be wrong - and demanded, quite logically, that one of them be thrown out. Naturally, from their view as Christians, what they wanted banned was the teaching of Evolution! Many of the children, unable to reconcile this conflicting duality, naturally, develop a compartmentalised way of thinking which lasts throughout their lives. They are, generally, unable to escape the massive Christian conditioning, which inevitably colours and shapes their outlook and perspectives even outside the religious compartment. Behind the comfortable facade of Western liberalism and freedom of thought, is the reality that the long arm of the spirit of medieval Christianity - of the age of the Inquisition - is still alive and well. Galileo was just one person who was persecuted by the Church when he had the effrontery to formulate theories which ran counter to Christian theology. The new educational curriculum in the UK, designed to impose Christianity on non-Christians, is part of that medieval tradition, amazingly extended to the Twentieth Century in a new surge of Christian fundamentalism.
