UK: Bruce Coleman, 2003. Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Colour plates of 22 species of grebes. maps. Often overlooked and perhaps under appreciated, grebes are nevertheless one of the more fascinating groups of birds. They are one of the oldest too, first appearing 80 million years ago. Since- then they have spread throughout the world to give the 22 modern- day species. However, that total is already falling with two and probably three species oextinct, and about one-third of all species classified as vulnerable or endangered. In Grebes of the World Malcolm Ogilvie has amassed a wealth of information on every aspect of the family. Some of the earliest studies of bird behaviour were performed on grebes, and from their breeding behaviour in particular arose a new vocabulary, such as the 'ghostly. penguin dance' and the 'weed-ceremony', to describe their often weird and wonderful antics. These patterns of behaviour and more are described in vivid detail within the book, which is divided into three sections. The first, the Introduction, begins with grebe taxonomy, listing each species and subspecies, and detailing their distributions. Sections on size, plumage, behaviour, diet and conservation follow, each-giving a fascinating insight into these often unusual birds. The main part of the book is taken up with the species accounts. Every description includes a distribution map, but this is not an identification guide or a scientific monograph. Rather, the author, while ensuring that background information tan distribution and habits is given throughout, has chosen for each species features of particular relevance and interest. For each species there is a superb full-page painting showing the grebe in summer plumage in its natural habitat. Painted by one of the country's leading bird artists, the , illustrations bring to life these elegant birds. The final section of the book condenses all the hard facts of grebe life into four appendices, the final one of which looks into the history of how and when all of the specific and subspecific names of grebes originated. There is also a double-page plate o showing all winter plumages. For anyone interested in bird life, Grebes of the World is a visual treat that will inform, amuse and above all enliven their knowledge of this small but widespread family.. First Edition. First Printing.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Colour Plates. 4to.
