Learning for the Future examines the ways in which the changing purpose of education influence the development of new identities and new human capabilities. There is an emerging need to recognise different forms of cultural capital and competence and to facilitate "border crossings" through the education of whole persons for a multicultural and global era, as well as a need to work towards equity in and through education. These are all fundamental issues confronted in this book. Held in July 2001 and jointly hosted by the Dimotiko Skolio of Spetses in Greece and RMIT University, the Eighth International Literacy and Education Research Network Conference-Learning for the Future-drew papers from leading academics and teachers from around the world, with participants reflecting on the many challenges confronting educators in the 2000s. The conference focussed on four interrelated themes- "new worlds"; "new literacies", "new learning"; and "new people"- all crucial for planning education for the future and as a means for dealing with the learning consequences of both globalisation and multiculturalism. Learning for the Future contains the papers presented by keynote speakers at the Spetses Conference 2001. Academics presented in the book are: Mary Kalantzis; Gella Varnava-Skoura; Bill Cope; Georgios Tsiakalos; Donaldo P. Macedo; James Paul Gee; Scott Poynting; Mike Donaldson; Jim Cummins; Ambigapathy Pandian; Martin Nakata; Pippa Stein; Denise Newfield; Richard Sohmer; Sarah Michaels; Vasilis Koulaidis; Kostos Dimopoulos; Spyridoula Sklaveniti and Bessie Dendrinos.
