The Spectronian species typically have an average lifespan of 72 years. It is the aspect of longevity of age which inspires the Spectronians to integrate the two species. The story begins by examining the lives of some of those offspring, of human beings whose mothers, or fathers, are of extraterrestrial origin. Brent Lockhart has a privileged upbringing. After university he finds his wealth by taking garbage directly from Chicago's waste plants and then turning those fibers into ecoplastics. He then has plants in almost every city across the nation. He is also working on a project to build an automobile that can fly, a project that would change the world. At a young age his accomplishments have become a national success story. Brent Lockhart is not aware of a twin brother named Darius Rojas whose circumstances are much different. He was found as a baby on a mountain pasture in the Andean mountain region in a country called Santana. Santana was a former province of Columbia but was broken off from Columbia because of civil war. Darius is taught by his father to become a shepherd, and the village butcher. The villagers face challenges because of roaming bands of rebels. To protect the villages in the mountain regions the international community have brought in the Venezuelan Army, forming a 'Peace Force'. The Venezuelan Peace Force and the rebels are much the same. The village people are at their mercy, and rape and pillage from both factions is not uncommon. An incident occurs where Venezuelan 'Peace Keepers' come into Darius's village and rape one of their young women. Shortly after the event rebels arrive and then murder several of the village men, including Darius's father, accusing them of having helped the Venezuelans. Darius Rojas then retaliates, and together with a group of other young men seeks vengeance for what has been done by both factions. He becomes feared and is known as 'The Butcher'. The Venezuelans place a price on his head. The Cubans then come and secretly take him to Cuba, to train with their military.
