He soon became famous and appreciated - his first resounding success was a short story entitled The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, the piece that established him instantly as one of the wittiest and funniest writers and not only in America, but overseas as well. Though he was extremely successful as a writer and lecturer and earned fortunes with his books as well, he was not a very considerate and knowledgeable investor. He lost a lot of money by making unsound investments and once he even became bankrupt. However, Mark Twain was a fighter in all fields of life - he eventually recovered from his bankruptcy, he paid off his creditors and enjoyed financial stability for the rest of his life.
