In the book From the Cradle to the Brave, the main character Montique Powell is a young man who has been severely emotionally and physically abused by his grandmother. After she tries unsuccessfully to have him committed to an area mental hospital, and he has a severe reaction to the medication, he begins to take matters into his own hands. He starts raising himself under various roofs and places to stay. The main character grows into a tool used by the mob bosses and criminal underworld to get things done. Amazingly after getting away with a slew of murders and shady dealings, this man eventually finds that good people do exist far beyond the clutches of the wrong people. From the Cradle to the Brave tells a story of a big city kid who grows up hardcore and experiences things that the average person shouldn't ever have to see or experience. It is about the gritty underworld that many of these wannabe hard kids today would only dream about living in today. I look at many of today's kids and see an entire culture of confused, highly disrespectful young males and females with no real story to tell - the story of a man given a second chance. Something very rarely offered to naturally evil people.For those not familiar with the tri-state area, it was a turbulent time in the '70s and '80s. The '90s ushered the dawn of gangster rap, which wasn't what real Hip Hop was about at all, and this is how being a gangster was glorified too much inner-city youth. This story is about a regular kid with a promising future who was provoked to become the monster and how he becomes saved as a man. How? God? Himself? Ultimately who does Montique Powell owe his very soul too?
