Annabel Hamilton is a deaf widow and the mother of two teenagers, Vivian, 17, and me, Liam, 15. Dad passed away when I was about four years old, which turned Mom’s whole life upside down, and her sole mission in life was consumed with working and raising my sister and me. The doorbell rang, and the lamp flashed on and off, indicating someone was at the door. Surprised at the late hour, Mom jumped out of her chair where she nodded off waiting to confront me for again missing my ten o’clock curfew. She pulled back the curtain and looked out the window to see me with a young police officer she had met a few weeks earlier. After opening the door, Mom noticed the officer had me in handcuffs. My shirt was grass stained and torn. I had a bloody nose, a scrape across my left forehead, and I reeked of alcohol. Mom felt her heart drop. Fighting back the tears, she so badly wanted to say something, but at that point what could she say that would make any difference? As a young schoolboy I was an honor roll student with a thirst for knowledge. I never caused my mother any problems. I was just a typical boy, but just as I was turning 14 years old and entering high school, I began to change. At first, Mom thought it was just a phase and tried to wait it out. But after months of endless arguing, ineffective discipline, and my third arrest, it became clear to Mom that alternative measures had to be taken. Mom knew without immediate intervention, I was on my way to a disastrous life of hell. Bob Hursin, and his wife, Karen, are both hearing children of deaf parents. Bob's relationship with the deaf community allows him to help the hearing public become more aware of deaf culture. Bob began writing about five years ago with his first book: My Life with Karen and the Boy.
