Exterior cloth is somewhat faded and has fraying along edges. Marbled paper pastedowns inside each board. Contents are in excellent condition, with occasional marginalia in pencil. Ownership inscriptions on first page dated 1918 and 1951.. Scaled drawings, plans, black and white photographs. Course book on ballooning from Goodyear's Aeronautical School in Akron, Ohio. Includes chapters on: I. Parts of the Free Balloon II. Physical Properties of Gases and Atmosphere III. Gases Used in Ballooning IV. Physics of the Atmosphere V. Theory of Ballooning VI. Instruments Used in Ballooning VII. Handling the Balloon on the Ground VIII. Fundamentals of Free Balloon Operation IX. Tables and Contents An additional section on the effects of atmospheric conditions on the buoyancy of hydrogen is inserted toward the end. This section is a 13 page typescript, one side only, from the Navy Department Bureau of Constuction and Repair. There are also detailed log sheets for seven training flights, kept by one Arthur T. Sewell of the U. S. Navy. The flights departed from Goodyear's Wingfoot Lake hangar between January and March, 1918 and generally carried five or six people from 20 to 120 miles. Sewell was the pilot on the seventh flight and travelled solo. These flight logs include data on weight, wind speed, barometric pressure, volume and quality of gas, flight duration, and more. There are narrative descriptions of some aspects of some of the training flights as observed by Sewell. Also includes a section of diagrams to illustrate the text, and two sheets of black and white photographs showing various aspects of balloon handling. A fascinating glimpse at entry-level instruction in operation of hydrogen balloons, with excellent records kept by a student from the U. S. Navy.
