Boys Will Be Boys

Boys Will Be Boys, as catalogued in the present edition, unfolds as a curated assembly of photographic vignettes that probes the performative tenacity of male adolescence. The editors, Georges St. Martin and Ronald C. Nelson, frame the volume with a quiet insistence on the contradictions of boyhood—its bravado, vulnerability, and the fleeting incursions of intimacy. Through a sequence of carefully juxtaposed images, the book interrogates the social scripts that prescribe masculine behavior while hinting at the interior lives concealed behind outward swagger. The photographic text negotiates ethical terrain, balancing documentary clarity with reverie, and invites readers to attend to moments of vulnerability that conventional reportage might overlook. Its visual rhetoric accumulates meaning not through a single thesis but through accumulating detail, gesture, and contour. As an object, the book bearing the ISBN 9781563984808 becomes a possession imbued with histories of reception, collecting, and the marginalia of viewers who have encountered its pages. The editors’ curatorial hand—attentive to sequence and atmosphere—renders the volume a meditation on masculinity that resists simple moralizing. In its best instances, the work exists as a liminal archive, where the aesthetic of the photograph quietly complicates the social myth of the boy.^*
