Sotheby's, New York, auction catalogue for the H. Bradley Martin Library sales held on 12th and 13th December, 1989. Cloth, cover ill, 4to,. unpaginated (over 400 pp), profusely illustrated including many fullpage colour plates. 655 lots (nos 1323-1977 ) From the Preface: "Bradley's collection of books on ornithology and material relating to birds is not merely an important library. It is perhaps the best private collection of its kind extant today. Bradley had an encyclopedic knowledge of books and a discerning eye for rarity, quality, and condition. He bought worldwide over a period of sixty years. His ornithology collection, more than 7,000 items dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries, is amazingly comprehensive and includes much beyond the magnificent color-plate folios auctioned earlier this year. In the introduction to the second catalogue of the Martin Library, Howard K. Swann ably detailed the scope of the entire ornithological collection, but it is worth mentioning just a few of the books presented here in order to demonstrate the many varied aspects of birds and bird books that Bradley's vision encompassed. The great nineteenth-century French voyages to the Pacific and around the world frequently contributed much to ornithological research, and they are well represented here by the full or zoological reports of Bougainville, Dumont d'Urville, Duperrey, Freycinet, Labillardiere, La Perouse, Peron, and others. Extensive runs of the world's foremost ornithological journals are present, including the Ibis and the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, both of which are illustrated with hundreds of handcolored lithographs by John Gerrard Keulemans, Josef Wolf, Joseph Smit, and other of the leading natural history artists of the day. Scarce and extremely significant unillustrated works found a place on the shelves as well, ranging from William Turner's Avium praecipuarum (1544), the first book devoted to birds (present in two copies!), to a unique copy of Carolus Linnaeus's Systema naturae (1735) with the text printed on one side of the leaves only, to thousands of pamphlets and journal offprints. Many allied subjects are represented by nearly comprehensive sub-collections: for instance, falconry is represented by many classics, including L'Autourserie (1594) of the brothers Gommer and La fauconnerie of Franchieres, while an extensive gathering of Australiana features the explorations of George Grey, Thomas L. Mitchell, and Charles Sturt. The earlier catalogues of the Martin Library showed well a portion of Bradley's ornithological collecton, but only a portion. This volume better illustrates the tremendous range of the collection, in subject, date, place of publication, format, and value. Very Good. List of estimates laid in.
