The evidence provided by watermarks and paper stocks is used for a rich variety of purposes: to determine the dating, chronology, and authenticity of musical and literary composition and artistic production; to conceptualize the printing process of a series of incunabula; and to examine the effects of European politics on the paper supply for early printing in the New World. Other essays focus on the development and application of new technologies for the reproduction of watermarks, such as phosphorescence imaging, DYLUX, and digital imaging. Finally, another set of essays describe the use of the World Wide Web as a medium for the construction and dissemination of searchable and robust electronic databases of watermarks. The International Conference on Watermarks, held in Roanoke, Virginia in 1996, attracted scholars and other professionals from seven countries, generating an interest and enthusiasm that carries over into the present volume. The authors and attendees represent a remarkable assemblage of scientific and humanistic expertise: chemists, engineers, experts in digital photography, book dealers and collectors, librarians, archivists, art historians, musicologists, stamp collectors, bibliographers, literary scholars, cartographers, and historians."
