Anna Maria Comstock has experienced more sadness in her eight years than most children do in their whole lives. She is confined to one room of a large mansion owned by her parents. Her mother wants nothing to do with her and mother controls how much time father can spend with his beloved daughter. Anna dreams of a different life where she is loved and is able to love in return. One night in January a deadly fire took the lives of her parents and left Anna an orphan. Anna did not know of any family to take her in and was taken in by the Children's Orphanage in New York City. Miss Roberts head of the Orphanage published an article regarding the fire and the need to find someone who might be related to her new tenant. The newspaper article was brought to the attention of Lineal Comstock, brother of Anna's father. Lineal and his wife along with their three children decided to try to find Anna and make her a part of their family. Lineal and his wife, Eleanor, found someone to watch their children, and took the train to New York City to search for their stranger niece. They successfully located Anna and spent three days getting to know her without her knowing that they were related. It was love from the beginning and they all returned to the lighthouse. Anna was finally in a place where she was loved and free to experience the love that she had always dreamed about. She began a love affair with the sea and what it represented in her life. She was totally mesmerized by the movement and life of the sea. As she became an adult she had decided that the life of the light keeper was the life for her and she attended the Coast Guard Academy. There she met her future husband who shared her passion for the sea. Papa(Lineal) had to retire from the light house because it was too difficult to climb the stairs to the lens room. Anna and her new husband took over the responsibility for the lighthouse and she was able to fulfill her dream of making the sea safe for those who traveled it.
