Excerpt from On the Primitive Mode of Making Bishops: Being an Enquiry as to Whether They Were Created, Chiefly by Those Over Whom They Were, to Preside, or by One or More of Their Own Order This is a question of considerable importance at the present time, and the conclusion come to, in proportion to its definiteness, mat tend to determine whether the Church of England is still to be considered, by "consanguinity of doctrine," a sister of the Reformed Churches which now hold substantially the same doctrine (as the Church of Scotland, to wit), or, by virtue of a discipline claimed to be essential to the existence of a Church of Christ, she is not rather a branch of that stock which contains the corrupt and unreformed Greek arid Roman Churches. Many of those who take the latter view complain of the isolation of the Church of England, and sigh for union with one or both of those Churches, but regard all other bodies of Christians, however enlightened and influential, as forming no part of the Church of Christ, and every member of such bodies as being virtually "a heathen man and a publican" in relation to it. The practical bearing of our question at the present time is of no little importance, and the fact that it is before Convocation may give an additional interest to its discussion. But before entering upon it, it is necessary to premise one or two points which will be found stated and proved in my book entitled "Whose are the Fathers?"
