Softcover newspaper with the title banner along the top illustrated with a vignette of an American eagle under the legend "Oil 'n' Blood". 10 pages printed on newspaper stock, including the cover page, with several textual illustrations and the War Comics Weekly page. A bold banner headline printed in red & black across the upper center of the cover page reads "Peace? U.S. attacks after Iraqis surrender; Hidden war goal is Gulf supremacy", and an illustration of Paul Weber's 1934 lithograph "Between Wars" is centered below that headline. The cover page is slightly toned with some minor toning to the bottom edge of the last page. The newspaper is folded in half horizontally with some minor creasing to the corners. Very good. The contents of this newspaper opposing the first Gulf War, includes contributions and articles by the African-American poet, essayist & activist Ishmael Reed "The American Master of The Horrors of War" (an essay on Ambrose Bierce); Warren Hinckle "Administration's Gulf War Cloaked in Secrecy, Deceit; Liberation of Kuwait Not Casus Belli; Bush's Goal Was Military Dominance in Region, Control of Oil"; Bob Callahan "U.S. Report Suggests Kuwait Palestinian Reprisals". Other contributors include Phoebe Gloeckner, John Berger, John Bryan, Alfonso Rojo, Kate Coleman, Ron Turner, Andrew Kopkind, etc.Included are illustrations titled "Have a Nice Peace" by Art Spiegelman, "The Dog of War" by Willem, and the "War Comics Weekly" page illustrated with comic strips by Peter Bagge, Jim Woodring, and Bob Callahan & Mark Zingarelli, among others.The activist journalist, editor and newspaper publisher Warren Hinckle worked as a reporter for the San Francisco "Chronicle" in the early 1960's under Scott Newhall. He was said to have invented the concept of "radical slick" after taking over as editor of "Ramparts" in 1964, converting the periodical from a quarterly to a monthly and encouraging provocative investigative reporting. When Tom Hayden and the Students for a Democratic Society movement called for a demonstration to be staged to protest the Vietnam War with the 1968 Democratic national convention as a stage, Warren Hinckle contributed a "wall paper" reminiscent of those which Mao's Red Guards had posted during the cultural revolution. Hired by Hearst as a columnist for the San Francisco Examiner in 1985, his relationship with the paper ended when he submitted an anti-war article protesting the U.S. bombing of Iraq in January of 1991. When the U.S. subsequently invaded Iraq, Hinckle edited and published the short lived newspaper "War News" which began publication on March 2, 1991 and ceased following publication of its second issue on March 16, 1991. Contributors to the first issue included underground-comics artists such as Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Dan O'Neil, etc. while writers such as Hunter S. Thompson, Daniel Ellsberg, Ishmael Reed, John Berger, and others contributed articles.
