Miami: Scarlett Black Editions, (1987)., (1987).. Very good. - An 8-1/2 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide 4-page hand-colored pop-up book titled "Paths and Gateways on the Search for the Empty Afternoon" designed by Chip Sullivan. Text by Laura Cerwinske is illustrated with a wonderful hand-colored pop-up by Chip Sullivan. Bound in stapled self-wraps, the publication of this pop-up book is attributed to "Scarlett Black Editions, Miami", though it appears as if the text (and possibly the outline for the hand-colored pop-up) may have been penned in ink. The first lines of Laura Cerwinske's text "To Open the Gate. To Plant a Seed. To Invite the Power. To Welcome Life. To Sanctify...." reflect the essence of Chip Sullivan's pop-up which corresponds to the date of his "Dioramas" exhibition at the Barbara Gillman Gallery. The hand-colored illustration has 3 parts. An arch framed by shrubs has an opening through which one can see right through the opening in the second gate, to the final pop-up. The second gate is framed by pyramids and geometrical forms which hint at abstract buildings or, perhaps, a beehive. The pop-up's final panel hints at oval multi-colored feathers crowning geometric structures which suggest a garden within. Dated within the illustration, this 1987 pop-up book is housed in a glossy light blue 2-pocket folder containing material put together by the Barbara Gillman Gallery of Miami Beach, Florida promoting Chip Sullivan's work. Additionally housed within this 11-3/4 inch high by 9-1/2 inch wide press kit are the following:An 11-page list of "Exhibitions" of Chip Sullivan's works with a list of publications by and about the artist.A 9-page photocopy of the "Christmas Books 1992" "New York Times Book Review" by Anne Raver of "Gardening" books, with a special emphasis on the book "The Meaning of Gardens" which includes essays and illustrations by Chip Sullivan".A 2-page photocopy of the June 1992 cover for the periodical "Landscape Architecture: Reinventing the City" issue with a cover illustration by Chip Sullivan.A 2-page photocopy of the editorial page of the periodical "Landscaped for the 21st Century" with a full-page illustration by Chip Sullivan titled "The California Garden Series" with text by the artist.A 3-page photocopy of an article on "The Myth of Significant Placement" by Chip Sullivan and Frances Butler with an illustration by the artist.A 3-page photocopy of the September 1990 "Landscape Architecture" periodical's article on "Academic Assemblage" written by Chip Sullivan.A 3-page photocopy of "The Architectural Review" with an illustration of one of Chip Sullivan's designs.A 6-page photocopy of a review by Anna C. Noll of Chip Sullivan's "Gardens: Real and Imagined" appearing in the July 1989 issue of the periodical "Progressive Architecture".A 4-page photocopy of an August 1990 article by Michael Leccese entitled "Rome: No Holiday, But a Rite of Passage" in the periodical "Landscape Architecture" which refers to Chip Sullivan.Following the principles of the Wise Woman tradition which she studied with sunsun Weed, the artist, writer and publisher Laura Cerwinske founded Blue Hair Lady Publishing. Cerwinske authored more than 20 books on art and creativity and was the creator of Radical Writing, an on-line creative writing course. The landscape architect, artist and author Chip Sullivan is a professor of landscape architecture and environmental planning at the University of California, Berkeley. The author of several books, Sullivan is the son of an aspiring cartoonist, and learned to draw by imitating cartoons from "Mad Magazine". In addition to being influenced by comic artists such as Jack Kirby, Wally Wood and Ed Roth, Sullivan drew inspiration from the books of Carlos Castaneda and Jack Kerouac. Unfulfilled by the work he was doing for a large corporate architecture firm, Sullivan would spend his nights working on his own innovative landscape designs which sought to reduce society's dependence on fossil fuels. His 2018 Iowa State University lecture and workshop was titled "The Alchemy of Creativity".
