Excerpt: . . . over the tracks of the Philadelphia and Reading and Pennsylvania Roads, which possess every requisite facility for the accommodation of its load and through trafiic, and whose terminals in many respects confer upon the business interests of the City advantages equal to those of any competitive seaport. The Lehigh Valley Company now owns and operates a double track railway between New York and the Niagara frontier at Buffalo and Supensiou Bridge, a distance of four hundred and fifty miles forming its main line which is equipped with road-bed and rolling stock of the most efiicient character. Moreover, it has acquired and developed at these commanding termini, as well as at intermediate points, ample facilities to meet both present and prospective requirements for the receipt, storage and distribution of all classes of freight. While, therefore, the Lehigh Valley System is essentially a New York Trunk Line, the geographical location and proximity of its route to Philadelphia, where the ownership and management of the property is largely vested, necessarily impart to it an important position in the transportation interests of this Port through the connections named. The Main line and branches cover a territory abounding in natural resources and manufacturing industries which are thus rendered tributary to Philadelphia. The Anthracite coals of the Lehigh region, which are so widely and favorably known by reason of their excellent quality, can be consigned to. consumers at all city points of delivery on the Philadelphia and Reading and Pennsylvania Lines on equal terms. The Dairy and Farm products of western and central New York State, which is particularly noted for this industry, are in like manner brought within easy reach of local. . .
