Be generous, spare a helpless maid, And leave me still by Ettricks shade; For I neer can leave my father here, To be the love of a Cavalier! But if I give your father life, And joyous liberty; And give him back his ancient hall, Then will ye wend with me Your sire shall be alive and free, If he a loyal knight will be; And you shall be the wife, so dear, Of a soldier, and a Cavalier! O, then Ill clasp thy hand in mine, And give thee all my heart; Ill bid my much-loved sire, farewell, And from my home depart. Ill leave my father here at home, And with thee oer the Tweed will roam; Ill be thy grateful wife and dear, My brave and generous Cavalier! April, 1868. Lines on Jeremiah xiv. 34. JERUSALEM! Jerusalem! How desolate art thou! All thy streets are cold and silent, And thy harp is tuneless now.
