But Livy with his tendency to Graecise largely extended the usage, employing it with much greater freedom than his predecessors. Strictly speaking a participle is required in such cases to attach the adverb to, Latin having no article, as Greek has, with which to attach the adverb straight to the noun. See Livy IV.
