Excerpt: . . . o1 Dr. Benjamin Hazelton, moved to Belfast, Maine. Here he was soon followed by his five brothers all of whom settled in Belfast except Arad and Harry who sought other homes in the same State. Benjamin was a merchant, and Paul entered his employ, later on himself becoming an independent business man. He proved to be very successful, dealing in many and varied articles according to the fashion of that day. Honest and upright, he exacted from those about him the most scrupulous exactness, and each clerk in his employ was furnished with a code of rules to be strictly observed. Some of these still exist in his own handwriting. He was a prominent man of affairs generally, and interested himself alike in shipbuilding, the establishment of the first bank, and of the first insurance company. His life, thus passed in the city of his adoption, secured to him ample time for close application to business which finally yielded him merited success. He was also an accomplished sportsman. On March 17, 1878, he passed away, an old and honored citizen, a man whose life had been always spent among his own people with the exception of a term in the Legislature. Among other bequests he left 20000 for the establishment of a public library, an equal amount to the Unitarian cause, for he was an ardent and staunch upholder of this faith, generous gifts to several charitable institutions, and many private. donations. Upon the death of his widow in 1886, the money thus left was appropriated as well as that of the Wilson fund, and a solid and handsome public building was erected for the purpose designated.
