On his way to South Terrace he called on a poor woman whom he had left very ill, or rather he was going to call, but he stopped at the half opened door, on hearing a low soft voice repeating a hymn; he knew the voice was Margery's, he had asked her to visit the woman; and as she was there, he turned to go, lingering just a moment to hear the verse she was saying:--"My God, I thank Thee, who hast made The earth so bright; So full of splendour and of joy Beauty and light; So many glorious things are here, Noble and right." One might have thought the words hardly appropriate to a woman dying in lonely poverty; but she had learnt to "rejoice in the Lord alway," and a brilliant sunset seen through the diamond paned cottage window was a source of joy to her, and her remarks on it had reminded Margery of the hymn she was repeating. Harry felt that the third verse chimed in with his feelings better than the first, and he waited to hear it:--"I thank Thee more that all our joy Is touch'd with pain; That shadows fall on brightest hours; That thorns remain; So that earth's bliss may be our guide, And not our chain." It was even so with him; thorns did and would remain in his life's pathway, but was he thanking God for them? Had he not rather been murmuring that any shadow should fall across his life? The words did him good, and he went on his way without waiting to see Margery, glad that it was her voice that had brought comfort to his soul in the first moment of his return. Margery herself needed the words also; she just now was rejoicing in such an inner sunlight, that she was likely to forget that...
