The latest expression of America s philanthropic spirit is the great agency for human welfare which has been so munificently endowned by Mr. Rockefeller and which has entered upon a policy that will bring blessings to the people of China. The commission that was sent out in 1914 to investigate health conditions, and to propose a plan of operation, which the Rockefeller Foundation might appropriately conduct, included such men as: President Harry Pratt Judson of the University of Chicago, Dr. Francis W. Peabody of the Harvard Medical School, and Mr. R. S. Greene then in the United States Consular Service. A special department known as the China Medical Board was organized to have charge of this work. A glimpse of the activity of this board will show the tremendous influence it is exercising upon the landmarks of China s medical progress. The property of the Peking Medical College, a school previously supported by six missionary societies, was reorganized under a board of trustees representing both the China Medical Board and the Missions. The standard of this institution was at once raised by virtue of the select personnel of trained American doctors, headed by Dr. Franklin C. McLean, a graduate of Rush Medical College. The admission requirements are intended to correspond to the American equivalent of two years of college work in the sciences after graduation from high school. The second institution contemplated by the China Medical Board is the Shanghai Medical College, similar in features and standard to that of Peking Medical College. In view of the importance of developing a Chinese medical literature, enormous efforts have been made to this end in the form of contributions. To the China Medical Missionary.
