Excerpt: . . . is conquered, and must be organised. He is the conqueror, not of men indeed, but of the country. It is then allowable to stop, and await the early and dreaded Russian winter. Vitepsk will be an excellent cantonment. The course of the Dwina and Borysthenes will mark the French line. The siege artillery will go to Riga, on which last position the left of the army will rest. Vitepsk, to which Nature has given woods, and to which he, Napoleon, will give walls, will serve as an entrenched camp in the centre. The right wing will extend to Bo-Bruisk, of which it must take possession, and blockhouses must be constructed along the whole line. Thus encamped, nothing will be wanting to the army. Besides the magazines of Dantzic, Vilna. , and Minsk, Courland and Samogitia will contribute their share. Thirty-six immense ovens are to be erected, which will turn out at once 30, 000 lbs. of bread. So much for material wants. Hovels spoil the square of the palace; they must be knocked down, and the rubbish carried off. The town is empty; the richest men and most elegant females of Vilna and Warsaw are to be invited to pass the winter there. A theatre is to be built; and, for its opening, Talma and Mdlle. Mars will come to Vilna, as they went to Dresden. So much for luxury. Half an hour was enough to run over this plan; and it being once settled in his head, Napoleon takes ofi his sword, throws it on a table, then addressing the King of Naples, who has just come in, -- Murat, says he, the first campaign of Russia is finished; let us set up our eagles here. I must look round me, and rally. Two great rivers mark our position; let us form a square, cannon at the angles, and inside, so that we may have a cross-fire everywhere. 1813. . . You fly into a passion, and call in the landlord: That port! take it away, it is not fit to drink. And the landlord shrugs, says that On dit que cest bien bon, iand retires, sacring in his heart at ces btes dAnglais. The fact is, that port is extensively manufactured in France, and especially in Britanny, whereifrom old English connexion I suppose the ghost still lingers; and at SaintBrieux it is fabricated by thousands of bottles annually. Witli this ignorance of port is coupled an equal one of sherry. They have no notion of it, though they drink it occasionally. But there is one reason of this in the fact, that by the rules of the customs sherry is classed as a liqueur, and therefore is subject to a higher duty, and so the people lose one of the finest wines in the world. For, as I once heard an old English friendsay, How the deuce can you expect the French to get on well they neither drink port nor sherry; they shoot foxes, and drive on the wrong side of the road. Britanny is a very tolerable country for a gentleman to live in, in many respects, i. e. that for a moderate income he can live well. In many points, with 2501. a year a man may have luxuries, and by degrees he will become so far habituated to the style of the country as to cease disturbing himself for the want of certain English comforts. Houserent is moderate, except in towns, as the French in general do not like country-houses. A good house in the country is to be had at from l2l. to 251. per annum, and generally with land and a garden; but often money must be laid out to make it a comfortable residence. Wages are low, from 31. to 5l. for women, and about the same, or a little more, for men. . . . This item ships from La Vergne,TN.
