One of the practical conveniences which is characteristic of weigh hopper service is that coal may be drawn from one end of the bunker and discharged into a stoker at some distance from the point of loading. In the operation of weigh hoppers it is propelled along the track by means of a hand chain. Both the gates for the coal bunker and the gate for the weigh hopper are operated from the floor level. An installation of this character provides an equipment whereby the coal may be mechanically conveyed from the point where it is dumped from the railway cars to the stoker where it is burned, with practically no hand labor. Installations for plants of similar capacity may be designed to operate with equal success.
