Lucernes One Sight THIS is the famous and familiar Lion of Lucerne, the memorial to those brave Swiss guards who in the bloody days of the French Revolution fell defending the palace of the Tuileries and the King to whom, in that distant and alien land, they had pledged their loyalty. The celebrated Thorwaldscn modeled the Lion, who, even in death, guards the shields with the cross of Helvetia and the lilies of France upon them. It is hewn into the side of a sandstone cliff, which has green trees about it and a little clear pool at its foot. No longer ago than ones own boyhood one visited Lucerne to see it, and saw it seriously, with hushed voice and memories of the Paris tragedy. Then miniatures, picture post-cards and the decline in the sculptors fame made the poor Lion for a time almost a joke. And even now trinket shops, beer and tea gardens, panoramas nearby, do what they can to vulgarize it, and by night a hidden light illuminates it garishly and theatrically. But it has slept so many years that it has gained some new dignity, and perhaps, by what souvenir mongers have tried to make of it, some new pathos. It is a little forgotten now, a little undervalued, and if one can, it is even worthy and gallant to see it again with boyhoods awe-struck admiration--time will in due course settle for us its real merits as a work of art.
