Judging from some of the abominations perpetrated by the feature film manufacturers, this would be a rareavis, but it requires no preponderence of decency to reject it as both crude and revolting. To secure a sensational title one does not have to stoop to all the grewsomeness of a chamber of horrors. The quality of a sensational title lies in its power to startle, but it should not shock or be revolting. Then, again, the title must do more than startle--it must impress. The Tragedy at the Altar, though it is too long, would still be infinitely better than the other. When Death Appeared would not only be sensational, startling and baffling--it would surround the incident with sufficient mystery to whet the spectators curiosity, and compell his attention. The softening influence of symbolism may often be applied to a realistic title with telling effect. A title in point is that of a recent Warner feature, entitled, The Eye of a God. This was used in connection with a sensational detective feature-picture, and came near to eptomizing the ideal for a picture of its kind. There was nothing in the film to denote the presence of anything approaching the distinction of a God, or was even the Eye in evidence. It was simply symbolic of a character whose unerring preception, in his detective duties, invariably led him in the right direction. A realistic title should be startling, but it should not be ordinary. A title of the latter class is, Rescued from the Burning Stake. This is one of those choke him at the altar abominations.
