The world, then, greatly needed instruction, and the light was now about to break upon it, even that light which had issued from the carpenters shop at Nazareth, and had been diffused through Galilee and Judea by a few poor publicans and fishermen. It was to spread yet further, and was to reach Philippi, Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, and See Neanders Church History, vol. i. p. 43-45. Clark, n even imperial Eome itself. It was to scatter the universal gloom, and to enkindle life in the valley of dry bones, although they were very dry. But a man was wanted to go forth and lift up the standard of the Cross before the nations, possessed of very peculiar qualifications. He would have to visit the cities of the Gentile world--to enter there the synagogues of the Jews--to take his stand in the forum or in the public streets, and to appear before magistrates and kings as a witness for the truth. He must, therefore, be a Jew--a Pharisee--one thoroughly conversant with the Greek language, and, moreover, a Roman citizen. If he were not a Jew, he would have no access to the synagogues, and would, consequently, meet with the greatest difficulties as soon as he set out. If he were not a Pharisee, that sect, which had its representatives in every city, would stand opposed to him, and would refuse to listen to anything he had to say.
