At the same time there arose in Holland, guided by a calm and thoughtful contemplation of nature, a school of Realists, which, unmindful of all traditions, only endeavoured artistically to seize and fathom the truth of the surrounding world, with the given means of painting, and thus created quite new a style which in a short time reached its climax in Rembrandt. Whilst the spirited Brabanter prefers liveliness, displays in his pictures a certain dramatic activity, and applies every means of his art, from the most effective down to the light, smooth touch of the brush to give expression to his fixed and strong intentions, and even makes the light local colours operate as leading tone of his pictures, and thereby produces an uncommon effect: --the Dutchman, on the other hand, indulges in a contemplative ease, and has little inclination to a violent changing and forming of things. He looks upon things as they appear to him in their real state, and, by following a great and sure principle in his style, and guided by an unsurpassed delicate sense of colour, --he gives them in his impastos and in the manner of his paintings in which he often allows the local colour to shine forth only in few lights through the predominant chiaroscuro, an artistic vitality of almost incredible truth. The third room contains a series of master-pieces of the t distinguished pupil of Rubens, Anthony van Ztycfc. perfectly adopted his masters mode of painting, and is only inferior to him in energy of conception, and in rapidity of active imagination.
