Lotos Flowers, was reviewed in the South-Atlantic; Edwin W. Fuller, the able metaphysical poet, unhappily cut off in the prime of his youth; James Barron Hope, poet and novelist, a most graceful writer. There are others, as Mrs. Meriwether, of Tennessee, and Miss Marr and Messrs. Gregory and Cameron, of Virginia, and W. H. Hayne, of Georgia, whose names must now be included in any Southern anthology. It is sad to know how many bards have thrown away their harps, or hidden them. Randall, the brilliant creator of John Pelham, but better known as the author of Maryland, my Maryland, contents himself with the laurels of journalism. Flash buys and sells pork! Requier, like his master, Blackstone, seems to have taken his Farewell of the Muse. These are three of the very finest singers of the South, and it cannot be but that their voices are missed. The. H. Hill, of Raleigh, N. C, belongs, too, to the number of those birds which can sing and will not. I feel that this list is all too short--that not only somebody has been left out, but that several worthy names have been omitted inadvertently. But in the enumeration of those who have wrought in prose--including, first, the scientists and historians, and, next, the romance and sketch writers--I fear exclusions are unavoidable. However, the intention is to make as full a catalogue of these as possible. In science, not taking into our survey merely technical, and by no means any elementary or educational manuals whatever, nor anything in the nature of official reports, there is nothing worth general notice, except two learned works (both published in London) by J. C. Southall, of Richmond, Va. , -- The Recent Origin of Man, and The Epoch of the Mammoth. . . This item ships from La Vergne,TN.
