Please, Mrs. Perry, mother sends her compliments, an will you count your kids, cos were one short i IMAKE it a practice never, if possible, to attend a pantomime, or its own brother, a modern burlesque, till at least three or four days after its production. For a precedent in this matter, I have the example of the late Mr. Piggott, the Examiner of Plays, who knew that in nine cases out of ten neither piece nor company was done justice to at a first performance. But last week I devoted myself to a little pantomime seeing. Things by then had got into proper working order, and one was able to judge ot the shows in their present, instead of, as one generally has to do, if one attends the first performance, in their future state. And this, inasmuch as I do not possess the gift of prophecy, seems to me to be more satisfactory. And first as to Drury Lane. I think I may say I never have been guilty of using language of this kind, which in reality means as little as, on the face of it, it means much. I admit that all Sir Augustuss pantomimes have been magnificent. I do not admit that all of them have been what, for want of a better expression, one may call a good show. Iast years pantomime, for instance, was, to my mind, spectacle apart, insufferably dull and stupid; and, as the song says, there have been ethers. m I insist on this brief preface because I dont want you. . .
