Not illustrated. 1855 Excerpt: ... stamped upon it as the character it was to continue to retain, by the Act of Assembly 1844, in which it is formally declared 'that the Sustentation Fund shall be permanently devoted to the object of a provision for ordained ministers of the Free Church.'" Upon this statement wo remark,--1. That the resolutions of the Assembly at Glasgow were adopted on the recommendation of a Committee of which Mr Dunlop was Convener,--that this Committee had under its consideration the question, whether all or only a portion of the Disruption ministers should stand in a special and peculiar relation to the Fund,--but that, unable to determine the question, they referred it for decision to the Assembly, simply stating in their Report the different views which had been urged upon their attention. A whole section of the Report is occupied with a statement of the views brought before the Committee. After stating that "there seemed to be no doubt and no difference of opinion on the subject, that the general or permanent rule for the distribution of the Fund should be, that after defraying the ordinary expenses of administration, and paying such fixed salaries as may be constituted burdens on it, the yearly dividend should be equally divided among all who are or have been stated pastors of congregations, or shall hereafter be admitted to new charges instituted with the sanction of the General Assembly, or such Committee or Commission as they may empower to determine as to the institution of such charges,"--the Committee proceed to give an account of these views as follows:--"Whilst, however, this, as a general and permanent rule, is universally approved of, it has been suggested that during the lifetimes of those who have relinquished their livings in connection with the Establ...
