Self-knowledge and self-improvement are two objects which every man of sound judgment must consider as of first-rate importance, the attainment of which, in the highest possible degree, ought to constitute one of the great aims in life. The two things are very closely connected, and act and re-act on each other. On the one hand, how I can improve myself if I do not know both my capacities and my deficiencies; and on the other, to what purpose am I acquainted with my faculties, if I do not seek to exert them,--or with my faults, if I do not seek to correct them,--or with my wants, if I do not seek to have them supplied? The highest and most valuable species of selfknowledge and self-improvement is that which refers to man, in his character as a religious and an immortal being, a being connected with God and eternity. It is good for man to know and to improve himself, in every aspect in which his nature can be viewed, but self-knowledge and self-improvement, in this aspect of his nature, are not only useful but necessary,--necessary to avert the greatest evils and to secure the most important blessings. In seeking the attainment of this kind of self-knowledge and self-improvement, what is fundamental is just views of the standard of religious and moral excellence, according to which we are to form a judgment of our true character, and according to which, too, we are to regulate all our attempts to improve it. It may serve a variety of purposes, some of them good ones, to know what is necessary and sufficient to secure a respectable or a high standing in general society, and in religious society,--in the great world, or in the Christian world,--and to turn that knowledge t...
