Business travellers carry the seeds of London with them; wherever they plant their feet, a new suburb springs beneath them, like the daisy--" the white man's footstep "--which followed the caravans across the American plains. But away from the larger suburban towns and behind the main routes of traffic, some of the most beautiful villages of Southern England still rest untarnished within twenty or thiry miles of central London. Green paths lead to them under Surrey oaks or Buckinghamshire beeches, secretly threading the quieter fields like a hare's trail. across a village hillside; and once we know the right way, we need see but little of the new red towns by the stations and the dusty highways. These pages are the fruits of eleven years' wandering in all weathers, and the routes have been chosen so as to escape as quickly as possible from the entangling fringes of the towns, and to avoid dull roads and monotonous landscapes. All of them lead through genuine country, and avoid those faded suburban imitations which awaken desires of the country without satisfying them. Although in many cases the routes are described at one particularly attractive time of year, their charm for the rambler is immensely increased when he has learnt to know them at many different seasons. The verdure and riot of a June birdcopse grow doubly vivid when we recall the peace and greyness of the same scene in December; and the fascination of the red beech leaves flying in autumn is intensified by the memory of their tender unfolding in May.
