Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1903. Excerpt: . . . INTRODUCTION i THE ACCUSED 1. Caius Verres was prosecuted by Cicero in 70 B. c. at tlie instance of the province of Sicily. He had been propraetor there from 73-71, and on his return was charged with offences under the lex Cornelia de pecuniis repetundis. The provisions of this law will be considered later. At this point it will be sufficient to say that under it a criminal action was brought against the offender in order to recover (repetere) monies which he had misappropriated during his term of office. 2. Of the accused and his family we know nothing beyond what Cicero tells us. From the name Verres--which, together with the allied form Verrius, is common in inscriptions--and from the absence of any cognomen, it is clear that they were not of patrician origin. Like the Mummii and the Marii, they had risen from obscurity with the expansion of the Roman Empire. The elder Verres, whom Cicero describes with pity as well as contempt as a thief and a bribery-agent, 1 had reached the rank of senator, and the family seems to have emphasised as far as possible some slight connexion that it had with the noble houses of the Metelli and Cornelii. 2 3. The career of the younger Verres, in the outline given by his enemy Cicero, was as follows. After a discreditable youth he entered on public life as civil war broke out between Marius and Sulla. As quaestor he accompanied Cn. Papirius Carbo, the Marian consul of 82, to Gallia Cisalpina. But he soon saw that his interests lay rather with the optimates and Sulla, and was not ashamed to cripple his general by absconding with the military chest which he controlled as quaestor. The money he took with him disappeared, and no account was rendered. An inquiry held in the year following led to no result, S. . . This item ships from La Vergne,TN.
