Excerpt: ... OEATION OF ESCHIKES AGAINST CTESIPHOK 1. Athenians, you perceive the preparation and intrigue which has been resorted to, and the canvass throughout the forum, which certain persons have been employing, in order that the regular and usual course may not be pursued in the city; but I come forward relying, indeed, in the first place on the gods, and secondly on the laws and on yourselves, considering that no preparation prevails with you, more than the laws and justice. 2. I would wish then, Athenians, both that the senate of Five Hundred and the assemblies should be properly regulated by the presidents, and that the laws which Solon enacted respecting the decorum of public speakers were still in force; in order that it might be lawful, first, for the eldest of the citizens, as the law prescribes, coming forward discreetly on the platform, without tumult and disturbance, according to his experience, to give the best advice to the city; and secondly, that of the other citizens, whosoever wished, according to seniority, both separately and in turn, should declare his sentiments respecting each question. For by this course, it seems to me, the city would be most judiciously regulated, and the fewest contentions would occur. But since all the institutions formerly acknowledged excellent have now been abolished, and since some persons inconsiderately proposed illegal (1) resolutions, and certain others put these to the vote--men, who have attained the presidency not by the most just means, but sitting there by intrigue;--and then if any of the other senators should justly obtain by lot the office of president, and conscientiously report your votes, such a man, those who consider that the administration should not be a public matter, but their own private propert...
