My Dear Fr1end:--You say that you "like to see plenty of money in active circulation;" and I say the same, provided the money is honest, and the causes of circulation wholesome and legitimate. I commend these qualifications to you as important and necessary, because money in active use may carry wealth to destruction as well as to wholesome use and advantage. You would not call it a good thing to have "plenty" of counterfeit money in active circulation. You know too well that such so-called money is an instrument of fraud from first to last; and none but rogues desire its production, or wish to have it introduced into circulation. (Do not the same principles apply to all forms of dishonest money?) But honest money may also be used to carry wealth to destruction, with no corresponding benefit to anybody. This occurs when John Stubbs uses the money that was paid him as wages to buy whisky which he drinks, and thereby makes himself a beast. It also occurs when Peter Pepps uses his dividend on railroad stock to buy and train and race fast horses. By unwise, risky, and abortive speculations; by extravagance of all kinds in living, vast amounts of wealth are, by means of money, every year simply carried to destruction Many a man every day puts his dollar into circulation when in his own interest, and the interest of society, he should have kept it in his pocket. You will now recall that I explained in my last letter how too much money in use tends strongly to this bad result of simply carrying wealth to destruction, and, therefore, to the impoverishment of the people.
