Excerpt: . . . saying he would have it, and took it away with him, which we consider a very ungentlemanly action. The Vestry Clerk quickly wrote out another Eate Book. On Sunday, August 13th, after the Church service, this book was signed by the Revd and Worshipful Richard Davies, Vicar, the 2 Churchwardens, and the other Overseers. On Monday, August 14th, the Petty Sessions were held at Greenwich. Mr Page, the Churchwarden, and the Vestry Clerk went into the Sessions room, where they found the 2 obstinate overseers to prevent the rate being signed. After much altercation on both sides, the Magistrates agreed to sign the Rate as being legal, which was done after the Sessions Clerk had given his concurrence. September 6, 1832. A rate of 2d in the pound was made for the County Lunatic Asylum. July 11, 1839. The Vestry adjourned to consider the recommendation of the Coroner to erect a Bone house for the reception of persons found drowned, etc. Only the parish officers were present. April 18, 1843. It was resolved to build a Bone house in the Churchyard. January 21, 1821. At a Special Meeting of the Vestry it was determined and agreed to assess the Vicar, on the Vicarial tythes, on the sum of 300, and on all future rates on which the Vicarage shall become legally chargeable. This resolution was signed by all the principal inhabitants of Erith on the rate book. HERRING OR HERON HILL. Heron Hill was once the abode of the Abells, an affluent family in Erith from the time of Edward I. until the tenth year of the reign of James I. ; the manor then passed by sale to the Drapers--also a high family--who held it till the reign of George I. , when, in 1725, it was divided into three parts and sold.
