Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V Foursquare to every Wind that Blows The port missionary is compelled, in the very nature of things, to be a Jack of all trades and a master of one. His chief concern is to promote the highest welfare of the sailor in things spiritual, mental and material; but in the pursuit of this high ideal, he has to stand foursquare to every wind that blows. He must be prepared for every emergency, and nothing must take him by surprise. It is an illuminating study to carefully analyse the form of application issued by the Society to candidates for the honours (and hardships) of a port missionary's life. If the candidate is married, he is asked: "Would your wife be sympathetic and helpful in work among seamen?" The Society wisely recognizes that if two people are to row in one boat it will be as well for them to row together. In regard to work among the sons of the sea, they must be, to use that fine phrase of Pope's: "Two friends, two bodies with one soul inspired." They must treasure a common purpose and be inspired with the same living hope. I can testify, from personal observation, how magnificently this ideal is being realized in the various branches of the Society. The missionary's wife is a true helper in the good work, and a real mother in the Sailors' Home. Then the would-be missionary is asked: "Could you manage a boat in a harbour or roadstead?" This is a most important question, inasmuch as in many cases Mohammed must go to the mountain if the mountain cannot come to Mohammed. The port missionary must take his boat out and visit the ships if the sailors cannot get ashore to visit the Home.
