If he does not know this, it is a simple matter to find it out by multiplying the diameter by itself aDd then taking 80 per cent, or four-fifths of the product. The result will give him roughly the area of the pipe. For instance, the area of an 8-in. pipe is determined by multiplying 8 by 8 which gives a total of 04, and multiplying this by SO per cent, gives an area of 51, while the true area is nearer 50 In. , but not far enough out of the way to cause any trouble. If the cold air supply duct is too small that may be the cause of the long pipe failing to heat, and the dnct must be enlarged to Insure good service. After this has been attended to it may be that the pipe does not hare sufficient pitch, and any good tinsmith will know how to change the connection at the register box or riser In order to get a greater elevation to induce the warm air to flow more freely in this pipe. If this fails to serve the purpose he should disconnect the pipe at the furnace and fasten inside of it a 5 or 6-Ln. pipe with an elbow on the Inside end extending down close to some place where hot air rushes up freely from the heating surfaces of the furnace. When this 5 or 6-Ln. vertical pipe gathers hot air and by means of the elbow turns it Into 3 or 4 ft. of 5 or 6-in. pipe within the 8, 9 or 10-in. pipe It will start a flow of air which will make this pipe continue to heat as long as It is connected with the furnace, no matter in what direction it runs or how long it may be. If the long pipe passes through a cold cellar, an advantage will be derived by wrapping It in asbestos covering, preferably air cell covering, to prevent the loss of heat. If the ro. . .
