There is a real declension in the Bornu language, made by postfixing syllables having no separate meaning, which form what we call dative, accusative, and ablative cases. The genitive case is usually known by its position only, and other modifications are made by prepositions, which appear, however, to be really nouns in regimine. 4. The genitive is placed after the case which governs it, as--bukru inki, glass of wine, 49, 1; kuku shitan-wa, noise of carriages, 25, 5; shindfatu, door of house, N. 74; kwmd fatu, master of house, 93, 3; kunlu tata-wa, childrens food, 97, 5. In the Treaty the genitive is supplied by the relative pronoun agu, singularly corroborative of the Rev. R. Garnetts theory of the genitive case. References are made to the dialogues by two figures; the first denoting the page of the lithographed facsimile, the second the number of the line: these numbers are copied on the printed transcript.
