Bless me! what a lot of laughable incidents, in connexion VOL. VII. M with sports of the field of one sort or another, I can recall tomemory as I sit here, soused in the depths of a comfortable armchair, in front of the fire! Why dont you pop em doivn on paper, then whispers a little bird in my ear. Pop em down on paper! I echo mechanically. By Jove! not a bad idea! I will. And, further than that, as there is nothing like striking whilst the irons hot, Ill do it now this very moment. Come on, my trusty pen! come on! and let us have a quiet laugh all to our two selves as we commit our recollections of the past to paper. Now, let me think for a moment, my pen. With whom shall I begin Oh, I know! Old Browser. Ha! ha I ha! Methinks I see him now, as the song says, hanging by the seat of his knickerbockers to a nail on the top of a post and rail fence, and yelling ten thousand murders. I was staying with Tom Haycock, I remember, in that very hard winter a year or two ago. We were out covert shooting one day, and old Browser--Benjamin Browser I think his name was; if it wasnt, it ought to have been--a rich City merchant, who in London did dwell was one of the party. Well, in the course of the morning we came to a small spinney, which, according to all accounts, was perfectly certain to contain a woodcock, if not two. Tom, for reasons of his own, was very anxious that old Browser should kill him if possible. So on arrival at the spinney Tom, explaining to the old City gent his views on the subject, and his anxiety to let him have a go at the woodcock, bade him get along a small path that ran through. . .
