Excerpt: . . . tenantry on their late visit, compared to what it was during the dearth of the year 1817. It is by no means, however, to be understood that the country has recovered from the effects of that calamity. The tenants of the Moneymore division had nearly paid up the whole of their rents, which were in course of payment before they had gathered their last crop. The tenants of the mountainous partsihad not been able to do so much, but the Companys Agent expected that when part of their last crop could be brought to market, they would clear a consider able able portion of their arrears; and though they have not yet repaid the loans which were made to them by the Company, and though their cattle, which died or were killed from necessity, are very partially replaced, the Court may have this consolation, that without the aid lent by. the Company a very large portion of the Companys lands must have been left to its indigenous production, and the effect of the scarcity might have been extended to half a century; whereas, at present, it is to be hoped that, by the blessings of Providence and ordinary seasons, the effect may not be felt at all at the expiration of two or three years from the present time. The Deputation received the most flattering attentions fiom the neighbours. They cannot take this civility wholly as personal to themselves: they are sure it was intended, in some measure, as an expression of approval of the Courts conduct and intentions. The Deputation ought also to note the hospitable and kind manner in which they were received and entertained by the Companys Agent, and the great assistance they received in their researches from his son, Mr. Rowley Miller, who has the agencies of some neighbouring. . .
