Philadelphia: A. Small, 1822. Hardcover. Good + condition. Ladies pocket book with an article extracted from the "North Georgia Gazette", many puzzles & a very early reference to Vampires, with exquisitly engraved frontispiece and title page. The folding frontispiece depicts 4 elegantly dressed ladies and a little girl in a salon, "Fashionable dresses of the year," engraved by Goodman, and the title-page with copper plate vignette of a little girl. The pocket book allowed the lady of the day to keep track of her expenditures and to amuse herself with prose, poetry and conundrums, while at the same time staying up to date with the latest fashion. It was the IPhone of the day. The early "Vampyre" reference is in the section entitled "New Country Dances and Quadrilles for 1822" lists as its first entre "The Vampire - Hands four around, leade down the middle, and right and left at top." This is only 3 years after the first vampire story was published by John Polidori in 1819. There are many sections of puzzles, including rebus, transposition, enigmas, riddles, anagram, conundrums, & logogriphes. On p. 108, there is a 2pp article entitled "Probable Effects of Cold" is extracted from the "North Georgia Gazette and Winter Chronicle, a Newspaper established on board the Ships employed in the Discover of a North West Passage, in 1819-20." It is written by "Frosticus" and suggests that it would "be a national benefit to make a turnpike-road from Hudson's Bay to this dreary region?" The first half contains the calendar, ruled memorandum blanks (account of monies), while the second half includes selected prose & poetry. Several articles deal with matrimony, including in Wales, . , answers to enigmas and rebuses, new enigmas, charades, rebuses, new country dances and quadrilles for 1822, new marketing tables, and a table 'Reducing Shillings and Pence to Cents'. A few of the memorandum blanks are completed, in pencil, mostly for grocery items. Period note at front paste down reads, "M. A. C's note book came into my possession Apr. 1884, E. H. Weil". 18mo, 2 preliminary leaves, 180pp, tables. Limp red morocco with tuck in flap. Some loss to tip of tuck in flap, covers slightly rubbed, spine ends chipped; few signatures loose but holding. Not found on OCLC; see OCLC: 20910998 for 1823 edition.
