Doc Spillman sat in the seat and he was equally as dusty. He was making the rounds from town to town. Doc was not like many of the medicine peddlers and was really a physician. He saw the sick when he made his rounds often for free. The medicine he sold was not just alcohol. He sold whiskey, cocaine and laudanum. He also mixed his own herbs and made many other real remedies.Doc stood six-foot-tall and was muscular he had ravened black hair and a well-trimmed beard and mustache. Though you couldn't see it, he had a dimple on his chin and on both cheeks and the bluest eyes that left an impression that a person would always remember. He was handsome and appeared both sophisticated and earthly a blend of character that few people possessed.The bells that hung from the medicine wagon warned off the bears and lions before he ran into them unexpectedly on the trail. The bells also let the customers know he was coming and on a still prairie could be heard from miles away. His trips were continuous and he often stopped along the roadside or trail to harvest the wild herbs and other plants that he used in his medications.Doc was very particular when it came to mixing his own remedies. He wanted the best ingredients. The whiskey was always the finest from the south and the opium came from the Chinese who had immigrated west. He knew where to be on his route to find the best herbs in season and knew where they all grew. Doctor Paul Spillman was a wealth of knowledge.
