The Cornhill Magazine, London, 1860-63. First Edition. Disbound. Very Good Condition. The author, Sir James Fitzjames Stephen, 1829-1894, was an English lawyer, judge, and writer. This special selection of five of his articles for The Cornhill Magazine underlines his varied writings regarding legal and criminal matters. In 1863 his General View of the Criminal Law of England was published, explaining the principles of English law and justice in a relatively accessible form. Of particular interest in these articles is his long account of the murder of Jessie McPherson by Jessie McLachlan. He also provides an interesting account of the courts martial of Captain Robertson of the 4th Dragoon Guards, focusing on the workings of the system. His other articles are largely concerned with crime and punishment. Writing at a time when Victorian law was being modernised from the harsher Georgian era his accounts provide a good indication of the relative liberalisation of criminal law and point to the future of how such matters would be handled. The contemporary thought is supported by lots of specific detail and accounts of cases making these articles a particularly interesting collection of legal issues.
