Good. SCARCE Catalog for the November 10 - December 13, 2001 exhibition at the Main Art Gallery of the California State University, Fullerton.Inscribed and signed by Don Bachardy to Renate Druks on the title page: "Renate dear, this comes with my love, Don, 1 March 2002". Also laid in is a 2-page autograph letter signed by Don Bachardy on 5-1/2 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide bright white paper. In his letter dated 1 March, 2002, addressed to Renate, Don Bachardy proclaims "At long last this catalog" but complains that "The color is way off in some of the reproductions, and there are other details that don't charm me, but I guess that it's O.K. for a starter." He goes on to hope that they can have lunch in NYC and, in a postcript, is sorry not to have seen her at "the Davidson's memorial for Joan".The American portrait artist Don Bachardy (born 1934) was Christopher Isherwood's life partner for over 30 years. It was a May-December romance, Isherwood was 48 when he met the 18 year old Bachardy in 1953 on Valentine's day. The couple remained together until Isherwood's death. Don Bachardy's works reside in the permanent collection of numerous prestigious institutions, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and London's "National Portrait Gallery" and several books have been published on his work. Bachardy has been the subject of films, including "The Eyes of Don Bachardy" by Terry Sanders and "Chris & Don: A Love Story". "A Single Man", starring Colin Firth is based on Isherwood's fictional book of that same name which was inspired by their relationship. The recipient, Viennese-born artist Renate Druks (1921-2007) was one of Anais Nin's closest friends. Renate was first introduced to Anais Nin by their mutual friend Paul Mathiesen. Druks and Mathiesen came up with the idea of the "Come as Your Madness" masquerade party to which Nin showed up in a skin-colored leotard with a birdcage encasing her head from which she drew out ticker-tape upon which she'd penned lines from her books. Kenneth Anger, in attendance, was inspired by the event to create his film "Inauguration of the Pleasuredome" which featured scenes with Nin, Druks and Mathiessen. Anais Nin and Renate Druks remained close friends until Nin's death and the character of Renate in Nin's final novel "Collages" is based on her friend. Renate Druks held her first solo exhibition of her paintings at the Lane Galleries in 1957. Her Malibu home later became known as a salon for the avant garde which was often visited by the likes of Kenneth Anger, Don Bachardy, Christopher Isherwood, James Bridges, Henry Miller,Virgil Thompson, and Anais Nin, among others. In her diaries, Anais Nin wrote "Renate's gift is a heightened mood which communicates itself to others. She created in a state of natural intoxication".
